An individual who is lactose intolerant is not able to fully digest the milk sugar called lactose, in dairy products.  Lactose intolerance occurs when the body is unable to breakdown all of the lactose that is found in the foods you eat.  Lactose intolerance is also called lactase deficiency - an enzyme produced by the cells lining the small intestine.  There are individuals that have low levels of lactase that experience no signs and symptoms of this condition and there are others that do experience signs and symptoms usually after eating or drinking foods that contain lactose.
